The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has published a Product Safety Report for baby sleeping bags sold via the online marketplace OnBuy, warning that the products present a risk of asphyxiation and overheating. The report, notification number 2610-0183, states that the sleeping bags do not incorporate arm openings and/or incorporate a hood, which may allow an infant to slip down inside the product during use. Excess fabric may then cover the infant's nose and mouth, obstructing breathing and leading to asphyxiation; infants are particularly vulnerable as they may be unable to remove the obstruction themselves.
The products are marketed as suitable for use from birth to 12 months. OPSS lists three OnBuy listings: a cream-coloured fleece-style sleeping bag with a hood with decorative rabbit-style ears, wrap-around front panel and enclosed lower section with rounded base (OnBuy product code PF8MSNG); a cream-coloured knitted sleeping bag with a hood, cable-knit outer pattern, wrap-around front panel, enclosed lower section and button fastenings along both sides (PMHH6RW); and a grey and white chevron-patterned sleep garment with a wide opening top section, enclosed lower section and matching headband with a bow (PMMRNQS). The country of origin is unknown.
According to the report, the products do not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. OPSS says the listing has been removed by the online marketplace OnBuy. Owners are advised to stop using the product for unsupervised sleep immediately and to contact the seller they purchased from to request a refund or replacement. OPSS has also published a Product Safety Alert for baby sleeping bags and points to NHS safe sleep advice for babies.
